Sunshine State Young Readers

The Sunshine State Young Readers program is sponsored by the Florida Department of Education. Only students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade are eligible to participate in this program. A list of fifteen books have been chosen. Students must read three of the books on the list. After reading each book, I require students to give me an oral book report or take an Accelerated Reader quiz on the completed book. Their reading record is charted in the Media Center. At the end of the program, in April, students who have completed reading the three Sunshine State Young Readers are eligible to vote for the one they liked best. The votes are then sent to the Department of Education where they count up all the votes from the schools in the entire state. The author of the book that received the most votes will get special recognition at the Library Media Specialist's state conference.

Students that participate in the program will be invited to attend an "all you can eat" make your own ice cream sundae party. To be eligible to attend the party, students in third grade must read three books, students in fourth grade must read four books and students in fifth grade must read five books.
